CMI, Corporación Multi Inversiones, has been recognized by the magazine Estrategia & Negocios in its special feature “Centennial Companies: Recipes for Legacy and Future”. CMI, a family-owned multilatina corporation with over 100 years of history, has demonstrated its ability to adapt, innovate, and grow over time.
From its founding back in 1920 in a small community at San Cristóbal Totonicapán, Totonicapán, in the highlands of Guatemala, to its current operations in more than 16 countries with over 40,000 employees, CMI demonstrates how perseverance, innovation, and a strong set of values can take a family business across borders and centuries.
Transformation and Growth of CMI Over Time
CMI’s transition to a multilatina corporation has been marked by significant changes. From 2015 to 2017, the corporation underwent a restructuring that gave rise to its two business groups: CMI Capital and CMI Foods. This strategic move, under the vision of “One CMI” despite its diversity across industries and countries, has not only consolidated its organizational culture, but also promoted its growth and development across various regions, under the leadership of the third family generation represented by Juan Luis Bosch Gutiérrez and Juan José Gutiérrez Mayorga, Chairmen of CMI Capital and CMI Foods, respectively.
Constant adaptation to market changes and the ability to innovate have been critical to CMI’s success and longevity.
Innovation and Sustainability
On the sustainability front, CMI has made significant strides toward decarbonization and investment in renewable energy. The milestone issuance of US $700 million in green bonds by CMI Capital in 2021, and the announcement of a $1.8 billion investment in 2022 by both CMI Foods and CMI Capital to drive growth, innovation, and technology in its operations, underscores its commitment to sustainable development.
Furthermore, the collaboration between CMI Capital and CMI Foods to launch the first fleet powered by solar panels is another important milestone in favor of environmentally friendly practices.
CMI’s journey from a small business to becoming a multilatina corporation recognized in the Estrategia & Negocios’ special feature is a testament to the power of adaptation, innovation, and commitment to strong values. The vision of sustainability for the next 100 years demonstrates that CMI is not only building a lasting legacy, but also preparing for a future full of opportunities.
